Castle Nuts

A Castle (slotted) nut also known as a castellated nut has slots cut into one end of the nut . When used in application the bolt or threaded bar generally has a predrilled hole so when the nut is threaded onto the bolt or threaded bar and torqued to the required position where it can then be secured using a cotter pin or wire to prevent rotation. Thus Castle nuts are used in applications where vibration or motion could undo the nut. Although both the Castle nut and slotted nut look the same and have almost identical dimensions the main difference is the thickness of the nut, as the Castle nut is approximately 10% thicker than the slotted nut. Metric, BSF, BSW, UNC and UNF threads are available.
